The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) is a trade association representing the
collective interests of producers of music sound recordings and major and independent
record labels in South Africa. Formerly known as the Association of the South African Music
Industry (ASAMI), RiSA was established in the 1970s. The association comprises approximately
46 000 members, including the big three multinational record labels, Sony Music,
Universal Music and Warner Music.
RiSA is responsible for running the annual South African Music Awards (SAMAs), publishing the
Official South African Charts, and acknowledging sales certification for albums and singles.
RiSA is recognised by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry as the
official National Group for the Recording Industry in South Africa. RiSA is also the South
African association responsible for issuing the International Standard Recording Codes (ISRC).
RiSA is a non-profit organization that acts as a Trade Association of South African Record
Companies. Its members share an economic interest in the recorded music industry in South Africa.
RISA also certifies Gold®, Platinum®, Multi-Platinum™ sales and streaming certification awards.
The RiSA Secretariat is led by CEO, Advocate Nhlanhla Sibisi, and employs several people who
attend to the day-to-day activities of the association. RISA committees are made up of member
record company employees who make their services available as volunteers. RiSA is funded
primarily through levies and membership fees paid by its members.
